LIHUE — Island School’s Sasha Rovinsky picked up a strong win over Kauai High School’s Trevor Carbonel in boys first singles, and Voyager Reed Brown put up a strong fight before succumbing to Red Raider Kai Villanueva in three sets Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation tennis matches contested at the Timbers Kauai at Hokuala tennis courts.
The matches where Kauai High School girls won 5-0 over lsland School, and the Raider boys were 4-1 victors over the Voyagers, were re-scheduled from the Kauai Community College tennis courts to the Hokuala facility to accommodate the spring proms.
In boys second singles, Raider Villanueva was silently patient in working his way against a strong Voyager Brown attack, the Voyager getting strong vocal support from the gallery that peered through wind screens. Villanueva prevailed in the battle, taking the match, 6-7 (7-4), 7-5 and 6-1.
Following Rovinsky’s dominating 6-1, 6-0 win over Carbonel in boys first singles court, the Raiders turned the table, taking the boys doubles competition, starting with Raiders Micah Matsunaga and Christian Teves defeating Voyagers Patrick McKenna and Foster McLychok, 6-3, 6-1 in first doubles.
Kauai’s Dwane Ancajas paired with Thaine Ochoco to claim boys second doubles, 6-1, 6-3, over the Voyager duo of Andrew Sclafani and Zack Davis, and Kauai wrapped up the boys’ win when Thomas Vetter teamed with Mathew Rivera to take a solid win over Max McLychok and Kaikea Kaui, 6-4, 6-3, in third doubles arena.
Kauai’s Tia Fulks, playing girls first singles, handed Voyager Haven Sadler a 6-2, 6-1 defeat, and Anna Burkman controlled the girls second singles, 6-0, 6-0 win over Voyager Ava Anderton.
Raiders Hoku Iseri and Katherine McNeill took care of business in first doubles, 6-0, 6-0 over Voyagers Kalia Hamid and Samantha Brown before adjourning to get ready for the prom.
In girls second doubles, Raiders Miya Reese and Kirra Carvalho handed the Voyager duo of Paulina Do and Lily Reynolds a 6-0, 6-4 defeat.
Kauai’s Emily Melchor paired with Selma Tausend for a win over Island School’s Alexa Lauren and Gianna Detrolio in third doubles, according to Island School coach John Crouse, who did not have the scores for the win.
