PUHI — The Isle Hoops B team rolled over the Westside, 73-19, to clinch the title berth of the girls seventh- and eighth-grade division Saturday evening during the championship match at the second annual Isle Hoops Holiday Classic at the Wilcox Gymnasium on the Island School campus.
“This is the only championship contest in the tournament,” said Jack Viohl, one of the tournament coordinators. “The other winners are by best record.”
Na Koa basketball programs swept the boys competition in both the grades five and six and seven and eight divisions.
“They were undefeated in the first two days and took the trophies,” Viohl said. “The girls fifth- and sixth-grade division title went to the Lynx.”
Isle Hoops is a statewide boys and girls community basketball club primarily serving student athletes in the fourth through eighth grades as well as the boys junior varsity basketball program at Island School during the off-season, Viohl said.
The program was founded by Viohl and Corey Dobashi in 2007. The Hoops Holiday Classic is the vision of Island School boys JV basketball head coach Phillip Baclayon.
“Since 2007, Corey and I have merged our boys’ team with community teams like the Kauai Thunder, Yung Swag and, more recently, the Lihue Lakers under Coach Lenny Rapozo,” Viohl said. “In the past, we have borrowed players from teams such as the Lihue Warriors, Team Central as well as players from Kapaa and Kilauea. Our boys fifth- and sixth-grade team finished the tournament with two wins and two losses under head coach Greg Meyers.”
On the girls’ arena, Viohl said the eighth-grade girls team merged with Con3 Jacks from Maui for the tournament under Coach Kai Pahukoa who brought his two daughters to play.
“Our seventh- and sixth-grade athletes merged with Kaulupono under Coach Neal Fagarang to make two Isle Hoops teams,” Viohl said.
