KEKAHA — Kauai Fire Department Ocean Safety Bureau officials have closed Kekaha Beach to swimming until further notice due to a shark sighting.
Lifeguards reported Saturday that a roughly 8-foot-long shark was sighted offshore. The type of shark is unknown.
The beach will remain closed until at least this morning, when lifeguards will reassess the situation.
For updates, speak to a county lifeguard at any lifeguard station, or call OSB at 241-4984.
In addition, the National Weather Service has issued a high-surf warning for all north- and west-facing shores of Kauai and Niihau, in effect now through 6 a.m. Monday.
Entering the water in these areas during this time is very hazardous and could cause serious injury or death, OSB said in a press release. Spectators are also advised to use extreme caution, as large breaking waves could make it dangerous for those standing along the shoreline.
The warning may be extended or modified as conditions develop. For updated information, visit www.weather.gov/hawaii.
