Hawaii surfer Koa Smith has caught the wave of a lifetime, staying upright for two minutes through eight barrels.
The 23-year-old rode stayed upright as the wave traveled for nearly a mile last month off the coast of Namibia on the western shore of Africa. And almost as amazing, two cameras captured the whole ride.
Smith and videographer Chris Rogers filmed the entire ride using both a drone that hovered overhead and a GoPro attached to Smith’s mouthpiece.
Smith says he likes to think that everything he’s done his whole life led up to that ride.
Smith owes his success to being every bit as much a calculated scientist as a risk taker.
Smith and many world-class surfers have mastered the art of reading weather charts to predict when and where the greatest sized ocean swells will hit. Getting there is the next challenge.
