“HCT After Dark” presents the Tony-Award-winning musical, Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods.” One of Sondheim’s most popular works, ”Into the Woods” is a musically sophisticated show, a dark comedy. The story follows a baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the king’s festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse.
Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.
This show will be rated PG-13. ”Into the Woods” will be staged at the Puhi Theatrical Warehouse Aug. 2 to 19, Thursdays through Sundays at 7 p.m.
Finally, HCT has selected Disney’s “Newsies” as its big fall musical this year, and auditions for ages 8 and up will be in mid-August. Dates, times and locations will be on the HCT website. ”Newsies” will open at Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall on Nov. 9 and run for three weekends, with nine public performances and school performances, closing Nov. 25.
