LIHUE — Gather Federal Credit Union, formerly Kauai Community Federal Credit Union, presented the state Department of Education an award of $9,100 Wednesday in support of the recent flooding that affected students in the Koloa, Keapana, Anahola and North Shore communities.
“Even though the school year is just about over, the funds will help those students in need that were affected by the flood as they prepare for the next school year that starts in August 2018,” said state DOE Kauai Complex Area Superintendent William Arakaki, who accepted the award.
Gather FCU, through its efforts as a lifetime community supporter, raised funds for disaster recovery through employee bake sales and contributions from its members who visited the credit union. Gather FCU also received numerous donations from their business partners.
“Our core values and credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people’ is exemplified in times of need,” said Gather FCU President and CEO Tess Shimabukuro. “These individual donations add up to thousands of dollars, which show how much our members care about our youth and our island communities. Our hearts and helping hands go out to everyone affected by the floods.”
Gather Federal Credit Union, through its 64-year community charter, has the potential to serve all of the residents of Kauai and Niihau. KCFCU is a $497-million financial institution that serves more than 34,800 members and operates branches in Waimea, Lihue, Kapaa, Eleele and Kukui Grove Village West.
