LIHUE — With spring football out of the way, the Kauai Youth Football program will host its first KYF Shoreline Fishing Tournament starting June 29.
Categories include ulua; papio; oio; eel; others, five pounds and under; others, five pounds and over; and a keiki division for youth 17 years old and under. Anglers must be entered into a category to be eligible to win the share of the jackpot prize.
Tournament T-shirts will be available as well as banquet-only tickets for non-fishermen. Deadline for placing T-shirt orders is June 15 to ensure proper sizing.
Application packets with full catch information are available at Rainbow Point in Port Allen, Lihue Fishing Supply, Bamboo Grill at the Wailua Golf Course and Pono Market in Kapaa.
Application packets and more detailed information are also available on the Kauai Youth Football website.
Deadline for completed applications and registration fee is June 28. Fishing commences at 12:01 p.m. on June 29 and continues until the weigh-in, July 1 from 10 a.m. to noon at Nawiliwili Park, the home practice field for the Lihue Kauai Youth Football teams. All fish must be weighed in by noon on July 1, to be considered for prizes.
Brad Hiranaka, KYF president, said this is a shoreline fishing tournament and, as such, is limited to fish caught on hook and line by shorecasting only. No drone, kayaking or other means to set line out will be allowed. Spotters will be around the island.
Once a fish is caught, anglers can call in and send a photo (via text) to Hiranaka at 652-9962. This is crucial because of the tie-breaker, which is based on the length of the fish.
Keiki anglers must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times for safety.
The awards presentation and banquet will follow from noon to 3 p.m. at Nawiliwili Park.
Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Kauai Youth Football program.
