LIHUE — Anna Hawks has not decided on what kind of teacher she is going to be, yet.
“I’m pursuing a degree in education at the Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania,” the Kapaa High School senior said, Tuesday night during the Kiwanis Club of Kauai meeting at the Lihue Barbecue Inn. “I’ll figure it out once I start my studies.”
Hawks, graduating No. 1 in her class at Kapaa High School, was the recipient of this year’s $1,500 Kiwanis scholarship which was presented during the club’s meeting by Patrick Ono, chairman of the Kiwanis Scholarship Committee.
Ono said it was nice for the Kiwanis Club members to get to know Hawks through her service and by serving as president of the Kapaa High School Key Club for several years, as well as earning a Gold Medal for Community Service.
Hawks has been a member of the Kapaa High School Key Club since she was a freshman and went on to serve as the club’s vice president and president during her tenure.
She was commended by the Kauai County Council for her Care Projects that she created as a high school junior. Care Projects are service projects focused on human needs, which she describes as “seeing the people behind the service project instead of the hours behind the project.”
Since 1989, the Kiwanis Club of Kauai has provided $80,500 in scholarships for deserving Key Club members. Recipients are awarded based on their leadership, community service activities, academic achievements, need, advisor comments, and an essay.
The Kiwanis Club of Kauai meets every second and fourth Tuesday of the month, usually at the Ho‘okipa Cafe at the Puakea Golf Course under the leadership of President Cheryl Shintani.
