PUHI — Sometimes, a tennis player’s measure of success is not going fast, but rather slowing down play to match the level of play.
“That’s part of the game,” said Dan Miyamoto, a spectator at the Kauai Interscholastic Federation tennis match at the Kauai Community College where Kauai High School girls met the Island School girls for a game that was rained out Saturday. “That’s strategy.”
Kauai High School swept both ends of the meet. The Red Raider girls took a 5-0 match. Over at Timbers Kauai at Hokuala tennis courts, the Kauai boys reeled in a 3-2 win after Voyagers took both sides of the boys singles.
Island School’s Sasha Rovinsky defeated Kauai’s Chris Constantino, 6-2, 6-1 on the boys first singles court, and Voyager Noah Howard was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Kauai’s Nicholas Badua.
Kauai came back on the doubles arena to take all three matches, the third doubles of Raiders Leland Kai Villanueva and Tanner Lee taking the match by default.
On the boys first doubles court, Kauai’s Sage Cierras teamed with Trevor Carbonel to take the Voyager duo of Patrick McKenna and Andrew Scalafani, 6-0, 6-3, and Kauai’s pair of Thomas Vetter and Thaine Ochoco controlled the Island School team of Foster McLychok and Max McLychok on the boys second doubles floor.
At the Kauai Community College site, the Kauai girls reigned, winning all of their games without giving up a point.
Red Raider Tia Fulks defeated Voyager Bonnie Lee, 6-0, 6-0 on the girls first singles court, and Anna Burkman was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Island School’s Hannah Whelan on the girls second singles court.
The girls first doubles drew a good share of the gallery to watch Kauai’s Hokulani Iseri and Katherine O’Neill shut down Island School’s team of Lily Reynolds and Paulina Do, 6-0, 6-0.
Red Raiders flooded onto the courts early when Kauai won the remaining doubles matches by default, Helena Huffman and Miya Reese getting the nod on the girls second doubles, and Rina Takabayashi and Mari Kanna being awarded the girls third doubles.
Kauai next meets Kapaa at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Timbers Kauai at Hokuala tennis courts while Island School closes the KIF tennis season by hosting Waimea High School at the Kauai Community College courts starting at 1 p.m.
