Da Shadow: Puhi park, shelters

Editor’s note: Old-timers might still remember the introduction from The Shadow radio program: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!” Jerome Freitas, a retired state Department of Transportation worker who is now better known as Da Shadow, since 2004 has been meeting with government representatives about problems he has discovered or that have been reported to him, and reporting the county’s responses.

What are the plans to improve the vacant park in Puhi located at the intersection of Hanalima Road and Oio Road?

Hokulei Park will be surveyed and fenced this summer. The Department of Parks and Recreation’s priority is to replace/repair existing park equipment. From there, the county will be looking into including playground equipment at this location.

How many shelters are located on the island in the event of a natural disaster (hurricane, tsunami, earthquake, etc.) and where are they located?

There are 17 emergency shelters located across the island; however, shelters are opened on an as-needed basis. For a full list of shelter locations and special instructions, please visit the Kauai Emergency Management Agency website, www.kauai.gov/KEMA and click on “Shelter Status Page.”
