KALIHIWAI – The search for a missing fisherman in waters off Kalihiwai on the North Shore will resume at daylight today.
Police have identified the man as 25-year-old Preston Ikehara-Yasay of Kapaa.
Hanalei firefighters and rescue specialists initiated the search shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday, when witnesses reported seeing an unresponsive man in waters near Kauapea Beach, in Kalihiwai.
According to a preliminary report, Ikehara-Yasay was last seen Wednesday afternoon walking with his fishing gear in an area known as Dragon’s Breath, near Kalihiwai and Kauapea Beach.
The search was suspended Wednesday night at approximately 7 p.m., and resumed on Thursday morning with lifeguards and firefighters on jet-ski, Rescue 3 aboard Air 1, and a helicopter from the U.S. Coast Guard. Shoreline searches were also conducted Thursday by the Kaua‘i Police Department, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, and members of the public.
So far there has been no sign of the man.
All agencies are expected to resume their search at daylight Friday.
