KAPAA — Two free sessions of “Sewin’ Love: Valentine’s Day Card” are being presented Tuesday by the Hawaii State Public Library System and the Kauai Makerspace at the Kapaa Public Library.
The first session runs from 5:30 to 6 p.m., and the second session runs from 6:30 to 7 p.m.
“Sewin’ Love” is recommended for children 12 years and older. Children ages 6 through 11 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
Participants will make a Valentine’s Day card using fabric applique hearts and decorative stitching on a paper greeting card. The class will be led by Maile Bloxsom of Vicky’s Fabrics and Carl Lozar of Kauai Makerspace.
During the process, participants will learn how to use a sewing machine to stitch and learn beginner sewing control. They’ll be able to take home the newly created card.
“The Kapaa Public Library Maker Lab is a place where people can learn and use new technologies and equipment they may otherwise not have access to,” said Lani Kawahara, Kapaa Public Library branch manager. “Patrons can also get help with a project they are currently working on, or they can start a new project.”
Kauai Makerspace, a nonprofit, has partnered with the Kapaa Public Library to provide skilled subject matter experts to offer free instruction for proper tool usage and safety guidance and to oversee equipment operation, including sewing machines, 3D printers, a 28-inch vinyl cutter, digital electronics and workstations, as well as ancillary computers.
The Maker Lab, located in the library’s meeting room, is open to library card holders from noon to 8 p.m. every Tuesday. Classes are free but registration is required.
“I made a sock bag,” said Aria Light, proudly displaying a pair of bags created from socks after working with Bloxsom and Lozar.
Her mother, watching the youngster’s glee, said Aria also tie-dyed her own dress.
Lozar said following the Valentine’s Day card project, materials will be available for a decoupage project, in which recycled materials will be used to cover a cardboard box suitable for Valentine’s Day gifts.
“This is all using recycled craft,” said Sonja Kass of Wailua Houselots. “It doesn’t have to go off-island, or sit in the landfill at Kekaha.”
Decoupage boxes can be worked on Feb. 6 from 3 to 6 p.m., and Feb. 13 from 3 to 7:30 p.m., in the Maker Lab.
