The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports successful adoption drives during the past few years have reduced the feral donkey population that once numbered in the hundreds.
Officials say a herd of about 30 donkeys live on about 6,000 acres of fenced ranchland near Waikoloa Village. Before efforts were made to manage the herd, the donkeys would cause problems for residents as they would roam through roadways and lawns.
Waikoloa Village Association officials say the goal is not to remove all the donkeys, but to keep the herd manageable.
Officials say people have adopted the donkeys as pets or for farm use, but adoption requests have slowed recently.
