A disqualification by the Kapaa varsity girls proved costly to the Warriors as the Kauai Interscholastic Federation paddling regatta finished with three of the public high school teams tying for first place at two wins apiece Saturday during the second regatta of the season at Wailua River.
Racing in a distance format where the junior varsity teams paddle for two miles and the varsity squads stroke for four miles, Kapaa, taking four of the six events last week, finished with two first finishes in the JV girls (17 minutes, 02.10 seconds) and the Varsity Mixed class on a 32:31.43 run, just 19 seconds ahead of Waimea’s A team who settled for runner up honors at 32:50.55.
Waimea finished tops in the JV boys (14:45.26) and the JV mixed (16:07.74).
Kauai High School, not marking any first finishes last week, capitalized on the Kapaa girls’ DQ to take top finish in that class on a 34:08.62 run. The Red Raiders also soared to the Varsity boys class by a mere four seconds, crossing the line on a 30:49.00 race over Kapaa’s 30:53.63 run.
Island School entered the Top 3 category in the Varsity Boys (33:21.29), taking third place over Waimea’s A team by nearly 20 seconds.
With the results of Saturday’s regatta, Kapaa leads the JV girls (10 points), the JV Mixed (6 points) and the Varsity Mixed (10 points) and is tied for second place with Kauai in the JV boys (5 points each) and the Varsity Boys (8 points each). Kauai challenges Kapaa for the lead in the Varsity Girls class, each team holding eight points apiece.
The next KIF paddling regatta is the final distance race, starting at 9 a.m., Saturday at the Wailua River.
