LIHUE — The First Hawaiian Bank Hawaii High School state football championships have some company at Aloha Stadium on Oahu.
Isahc Ulanday peeled off touchdowns of 65 yards and 37 yards to lead the Kauai Pop Warner Football League Junior PeeWee Hanapepe Colts to a 26-0 win over the Kohala Chargers of the Big Island last Saturday during the annual Shriners’ and Harold Naumu bowl games at Vidinha Stadium.
During the day-long offering of football games, the KPWFL board presented the Kauai Shriners Club with an award of $1,500 representing proceeds from the day’s admissions.
The victory advances the JPW Colts to the Wescon Regional JPW Division II playoff against Waianae on Saturday at the game which will kick off at 1:30 p.m. at Aloha Stadium. The victor of the game will advance to the 2017 Pop Warner Super Bowl and National Cheer &Dance Championships which will contest on Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex on Dec. 2 in Orlando, Florida.
Following Ulanday’s opening touchdown of 65 yards, the Colts went to Wesley Santiago who peeled off a 22-yard scoring scamper. Connor Mullikin did the point-after boot for a 14-0 margin in the first quarter.
Ulanday added a second quarter score with his 37-yard run in the second quarter, and Izah Henderson iced the win with a 25-yard run in the third quarter.
Earlier in the day, the younger division Flag Football saw the East Flags take a 26-8 win over the West Flags. The older division Flag Football saw the East and West battle to a 12-12 deadlock.
Kanoa Naumu scampered for 63 yards, and Xaeden Peralta ran in the PAT to give the West Mitey Mites a 7-0 lead at the break. The lead was answered in the fourth quarter when the East’s Jacob Bukoski ran in a 17-yard touchdown and followed the score with a PAT run for the 7-7 deadlock at the buzzer.
Jaiden Sams ran for a 40-yard touchdown in the opening frame, and picked up a safety in the second quarter to give the Koloa Rams JPW an 8-7 bulge in the contest that followed the midday showdown for the Wescon Region qualification.
Following Sams’ TD, Kapaa Eagles’ Kahiapo Kuhaulua-Leong found Shawn Paraga at the end of a 60-yard scoring pass, Nash Ahloo running in the PAT for the 7-6 go-ahead. Kuhaulua-Leong cradled the pigskin for a two-yard charge for the 13-8 lead at the break.
The Eagles picked up three touchdowns in the second half en route to its 32-8 final over the Rams when Ahloo passed for touchdowns to Eliyjah Relacion (65 yards) and Kaikea Martin (28 yards) in the third quarter. Nainoa Simmons ran in the final score for 10 yards with Lilinoe Makepa-Andaya — one of the league’s female players — doing the PAT boot.
Makenyah Okeiger picked up touchdowns of 18 yards and 26 yards to lead the Kekaha Titans JPW to a 16-0 victory over the Lihue Raiders in the day’s finale. Micah Brun opened the day’s action with a safety for Kekaha in the opening quarter, and Jun Whitmore coughed up another safety in the second half for the final math.
