Nursing homes struggled with choice to evacuate in hurricane

FILE – In this Aug. 30, 2017, file photo, members of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the Louisiana National Guard help rescue an elderly resident from the Golden Years Assisted Living home, which was flooded from Tropical Storm Harvey in Orange, Texas. Deaths at nursing home facilities in Texas and Florida after recent hurricanes made landfall have left families of residents, law enforcement officials and state regulators questioning evacuation decisions. Experts on aging say the risk of illness and death increases for elderly residents who are evacuated and advocate for a patient-by-patient risk assessment system in the future.
