DUBLIN (AP) — Ireland will play its inaugural cricket test on home soil against Pakistan in May.
Ireland and Afghanistan were given test status in June, becoming the 11th and 12th full members of the International Cricket Council.
The exact date and venue has yet to be confirmed. An agreement for Ireland to play Pakistan was reached during an ICC meeting in Auckland this week.
Ireland played its first one-day international against England in 2006 and qualified for the 50-over Cricket World Cup the following year, beating Pakistan and Bangladesh. The Irish have beaten England and the West Indies in subsequent competitions and are four-time winners of the ICC Intercontinental Cup.
“It’ll be another step on what has been an incredible journey for our sport in a relatively short passage of time,” Ireland captain William Porterfield said.
