KAPAA — The Kapaa High School boys air riflery team finished with 1,231 (251-256-236-250-238) points, with the girls’ team following two points back at 1,229 (243-240-267-253-226) Friday during the match that was rained out Wednesday at the Kapaa High School range.
Due to weather conditions, the firing was moved into the Bernice Hundley Gym.
Led by the Warriors’ Janice Manique firing a day’s high 267 points (93 prone, 80 standing, 94 kneeling), the Kapaa girls clinched the Kauai Interscholastic Federation title with its win over Kauai High School girls, 1,229 to the Raider girls’ 1,163 (226-220-248-252-217), led by Jenna Takata ending the day with 252 (93-75-84) points.
Ian Kimura led the Kapaa boys, locking up the KIF title with last week’s win, with a 256 (91-77-88) to finish with a 1,231 to Kauai’s 1,198 (240-253-252-227-226) points.
“We are very proud of both our male and female air riflery teams,” said Kapaa coach Ian Versammy. “This is an amazing accomplishment for both teams to have an undefeated season. Even more significant, to be the first teams to win a KIF title in air riflery in our school’s history. I am so proud of them and want to recognize them for their hard work and personal sacrifices to get to this point. The outcome of this season would not have been possible without the support and the team effort of athletes, teachers, parents and the Kapaa High School Foundation coming together with one common goal — Warriors!”
Next on the Kapaa calendar is the 2017 Civilian Marksmanship Program Hawaii High School Athletic Association air riflery championships, which will be held Oct. 24 at the Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall on Oahu.
