Montemayors top drag races

The Montemayor family scored big Sunday during the first day race of the 2017 calendar at the Kauai Raceway Park in Mana.

Presented by the Garden Isle Junior Dragsters and the Garden Isle Racing Association, Taylor Montemayor took the whole shot, winning first place in the Junior Dragster runs in the hot Mana plains.

Layne Montemayor, both vehicles sporting sponsorships by Matsuda Bros. Racing, GM Fabrication, Kaya Race Fuels, Altered Image and the Kuhio Auto Group, finished in fourth place.

Ryant Sakamoto, sponsored by Rapozo’s Auto Body — Rich and Philip Rapozo, Brick Oven Pizza, Triple T Plumbing, PMS-Pauly’s Mobile Service, Diamond D Ranch, All Kauai Bail Bonds and Half-Scale Dragsters, finished the day run in the runner-up spot with Sanoe Kaluahine, sponsored by Charles of Maui, Teddy and Kalani Tom, Dwayne Muffly and the Vierra family, claiming the No. 3 spot.

Kaluahine also picked up the Best Reaction honor on a 0.008 reaction time while Kyle Rapozo walked off with Closest to Dial in award, running an 8.91 estimated time over an 8.90 dial in.

Robbie Silva, sponsored by Rob’s Towing and J&N Pressure Washing, was the Top Gun winner over Bill Turk, sponsored by Turk Bros.

Manny’s Repair sponsored Karl Nakamura to the top spot in the Bike category over Matt Kaleiohi, and Mikioi Edwards settled for runner up honors over Keith Nonaka, sponsored by Puhi Industrial Parts & Bearing, Nex Gen Diesel, Dan Suga Construction, Western Motors, and Korey Wise in the Super Pro ET class.

Kevin Wataya was the winner of the Muscle V8 class over Eric Lazar, and Jon Nakamura, sponsored by Manny’s Repair took the Pro ET class over Randy Lawrence who got sponsorships from Purple Haze Racing, Manny’s Repair Service, Lawrence Ohana, Barry Arruda Construction, Souza Ohana, Kapena and Bobby Texeira.

Street class honors went to Car 3063 over Car 3317, and Brie Saiki, sponsored by HDH Production and Pau Hana T, topped the Sport Compact class over Bryson Fontanilla who got sponsorships from JGB Firearms and Menehune Tree Service.

The GIRA and GIJD close the 2017 calendar on Nov. 12 with the final race of the year. This is another day race at the Kauai Raceway Park.
