w Editor’s note: Old-timers might still remember the introduction from The Shadow radio program: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!” Jerome Freitas, a retired state Department of Transportation worker who is now better known as Da Shadow, since 2004 has been meeting with government representatives about problems he has discovered or that have been reported to him, and reporting the county’s responses.
Kamole Road, Kealia
At the end of this dead end road, there is no safety barrier blocking a large drop-off. Can the county look into installing a guard rail or other safety barrier to improve safety in this area?
Yes, the county will investigate the safety concern for this area of the roadway.
Grove Farm park (across from Kauai Community College)
What is the status on making improvements to this park, as the public would like to see playground equipment, a basketball court and restrooms?
Currently, the county has no plans to provide additional equipment or features to this park. As part of the Parks Master Plan process, the input we received indicated a desire to keep this park open. However, all of the above-listed facilities are available at Puhi Park, just down the road from this park.
Anahola mauka park
What is the status on the playground equipment and baseball field?
This playground recently received some new equipment repairs. The county is working to finalize funding to further repair the playground, improve the parking lot and install new baseball facilities. We anticipate these features to be fully completed by summer 2018.
Poipu Beach and Laukona parks
When is the new playground equipment anticipated to be installed?
The new playground equipment at Poipu Beach will be installed this fall. There are no immediate plans to install new equipment at Laukona Park.
Portable buildings at Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall
Are all of the portable buildings being utilized, and if not, what are the plans for these buildings?
The Department of Parks and Recreation has agreed to a long-term (25-year) lease with the Boys & Girls Club to allow them use of these buildings. It is our understanding that the B&G Club intends to raise funds to move and renovate the structures.
