KAPAA — With two outs in the third inning Friday, Kahaluu All Star Axel Puls whacked a grand slam during the Hawaii Little League District 1 Tournament opener.
The base-clearing homer pulled Kahaluu back into the mix following a 5-0 lead built by the Kaneohe All Stars.
But Kaneohe answered in the fourth inning when Quintin Barrett smacked a two-run shot to right field and the Kaneohe All Stars won, 10-5, against Kahaluu.
The win comes behind seven hits and nine left stranded and advances Kaneohe to face the Kawaihau Majors All Stars on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Kapaa. Following the match, formal opening ceremonies are scheduled to take place at the Main Diamond of the Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex.
Kawaihau, being the tournament host, earned the opening day bye.
Quintin Barrett, shortstop, topped Kaneohe with a two-run homer in the fourth and following it with an RBI single in the fifth. Bryson Tsukayama-Daniel finished with a single and a double. Logan Somoda, Keli‘i Makaio Kalai, and Kai Sanehira each hit singles for Kaneohe.
Puls had the big bat for Kahaluu with the grand slam. Shawn Niblock notched an RBI single in the fifth frame scoring Puls. Other hitters included Malakai Vendiola, Gemini Vendiola, and Kanani Judd Au.
