Carmila Udarbe, Easton Hew and Joshua Benjamina-Kanahele were deemed winners in the eight-year-old division Saturday at the West Kauai Lions Club second fishing derby for youth at the Hanapepe River bank.
“Participants were divided into age groups and prizes were presented for the largest fish, and the most fish caught by the angler’s age category,” said Eric Nordmeier of the West Kauai Lions Club. “This was a great turnout of Lions to help set up and manage the fishing derby, parents, and young children. For many of the young fisher-people, this was their first fishing experience and it was exciting to see them bring in their first, and subsequent catches. This actually turned out to be an excellent family outing for many.”
Anthony Udarbe and Ari Acosta topped the eight to ten-year-old category, and Shai-Lein Acosta topped the 11 to 13-year-olds.
The West Kauai Lions Club got help from many community sponsors, including the Salt Pond Country Store, Walmart, the state’s Department of Land and Natural Resources, the Kauai Fire Department and McBryde Company.
