Man from India dies during hike

HANAKAPIAI — A male visitor died while hiking along the Hanakapiai Trail on Friday evening.

Police have identified him as 71-year-old Chandra Vemuri of India.

At about 7 p.m., firefighters from the Hanalei station and Rescue 3 responded to a report of a man who had collapsed while hiking, approximately one and a half miles from the Kee Beach trailhead. Bystanders were performing CPR on the unresponsive male when firefighters arrived, but attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

The responding firefighters hiked the man back to the trailhead. Awaiting medics then transported the victim to Wilcox Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Foul play is not suspected. An autopsy is pending.
