LIHUE — The Payless ShoeSource in Lihue, open more than a decade, will be closing.
Shoe chain Payless ShoeSource filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, prompting closures in nearly 400 stores, including the one in Lihue and one in Kailua-Kona.
The Topeka, Kansas-based, retailer said Tuesday that it will be immediately closing stores as part of the reorganization. It has over 4,400 stores in more than 30 countries and was founded in 1956.
“This is a difficult, but necessary, decision driven by the continued challenges of the retail environment, which will only intensify,” said said Payless CEO Paul Jones in a statement.
Representatives with the retailer declined comment on the Lihue store, which has signs that say it is having sales and going out of business.
