Kauai Buddhists celebrate Hanamatsuri

LIHUE — The Kauai Buddhist Council invites the public to celebrate Hanamatsuri on Sunday at the West Kauai Hongwanji Mission, Hanapepe Temple with services starting at 9:30 a.m.

Rev. Bert Sumikawa, whose maternal grandfather was a Christian minister in Waimea before serving at the Lihue Christian Church, will be the guest speaker for the event that is open to the community.

During the ceremony, the Sangha has an opportunity to offer flowers and pour sweet tea over the statuette of the Buddha, his right hand pointing toward the heavens, and his left hand toward the earth.
