Kauai’s Zietz scores 10-point wave in Round 1

Kauai surfer Sebastian Zietz scored a 10.00 wave in the Round 1 of the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro men’s competition Wednesday.

Zietz, last year’s winner of the Australia event, totaled a score of 14.83 to win Heat 12 in the opening round, beating out Australia’s Ethan Ewing (5.17) and Brazil’s Filipe Toledo (1.77).

Zietz and the other heat winners from Round 1 await their match-ups in Round Three. The Round 1 winners from Wednesday were: Kelly Slater (USA), Kolohe Andino (USA), Jack Freestone (Australia), Jordy Smith (South Africa), Jesse Mendes (Brazil), John John Florence (Hawaii), Ian Gouveia (Brazil), Caio Ibelli (Brazil), Jeremy Flores (France), Michel Bourez (Tahiti), Julian Wilson (Australia) and Zietz.

Round 2 was completed Thursday. Heat winners from Thursday who advanced to Round Three are: Jacob Willcox (Australia), Nat Young (USA), Owen Wright (Australia), Joel Parkinson (Australia), Adriano de Souza (Brazil), Filipe Toledo (Brazil), Bebe Durbidge (Australia), Conner Coffin (USA), Adrian Buchan (Australia), Connor O’Leary (Australia), Kanoa Igarashi (USA) and Miguel Pupo (Brazil).

Round 3 match-ups were not available by press time.

Round 1 of the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro women’s competition began Wednesday evening. Results were not available by press time. Competitors from Hawaii are: Malia Manuel, Coco Ho, Carissa Moore and Tatiana Weston-Webb.
