Coach Basil Scott (he had an interesting take on global warming and the endangered seabirds) made the trip to Vidinha Stadium to help set up the electronic timing system (Kevin Matsunaga was busy with the electronic camera so couldn’t do his video thing) for the first Kauai Interscholastic Federation qualifying track meet.
Ron Velasco said he’s really retiring after this season, and Coach Erin Dunn (we should have had the Team Unify rally Wednesday) was busy at the officials’ tent with Coach Jon Kobayashi.
Kevin Cadiente was prepared for the long night with his Subway sandwich and jacket for when the sun went down, and even Manny Henriques made it to the track meet for photos. Kudos to Jamilee Jimenez for taking over the reins as head coach (coaches Richard Matsumoto and Kawehi Louis-Diamond are still there, too) for Kauai High School.
Most of the schools had armies of athletes, and it was nice to see Keith Kitamura helping Aunty Joan Kealalio and Coach Bobby Kubota at the field events (Dale Keep was talking about Taegan getting selected for Mufi Hannemann’s traveling team on Oahu, but opted to focus on track instead).
