Kapaa High School’s varsity girls soccer team advanced to the semifinals of The Queen’s Medical Center Girls Soccer Championships — Division II state tournament.
The No. 2 seed Warriors defeated Makua Lani of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, 2-nil, Thursday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on Oahu.
“The girls came out to play,” said Kapaa head coach Mytra McKeague in a phone interview Thursday. “We had a game plan going in, and they executed very well.”
Warriors freshman forward Talia Washington scored the opening goal at the 17th minute, and junior midfielder Kaylee Overmyer followed with a point at the 80th minute.
“Coming into a tournament as a freshman and scoring the first goal, it’s pretty big,” McKeague said of Washington. “I think she was very excited about it.”
Kapaa will take on No. 3 Pac-Five of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu in the semifinals at 3 p.m. today in the Main Stadium of the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.
“If the girls come out to play like how they’re coached, I think we’re going to do good,” McKeague said. “Just play as instructed, like we always preach to them. It will be a fun match.”
In the consolation bracket, Kauai High’s varsity girls soccer team defeated Waianae of the Oahu Interscholastic Association, 2-nil, Thursday.
“We were a lot more relaxed. We were able to play our style of soccer,” said Kauai head coach Joe Cassler. “We got a good result today because of that.”
Red Raiders senior forward Judy Ann Edurise scored the match’s opening goal at the 19th minute, and senior midfielder Britney Ehia scored at the 31st minute.
Kauai High will face Kalaheo of the OIA in the consolation final at 1 p.m today.

“They’re a tough one. Kalaheo’s always been a perennial D2 girls soccer powerhouse,” Cassler said. “They matched up well against Waipahu and some of the best OIA teams. We’re preparing, again, for their best. We’ll see how it goes.”
