Kauai High School’s varsity girls soccer team lost to Seabury Hall of the Maui Interscholastic League in the opening round of The Queen’s Medical Center Girls Soccer Championships – Division II tournament.
Kauai’s Red Raiders lost, 3-2, Wednesday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on Oahu.
“We played what we could,” said Kauai varsity girls soccer head coach Joe Cassler in a phone interview Wednesday. “I give credit to the girls. We didn’t give up today. We just couldn’t execute the way we would have liked today. Seabury played a very, very good game against us. They have a strong midfield and very strong forwards. We just got a little bit outmatched today.”
Red Raiders senior defender Chase Tokita got an equalizer at the 33rd minute, and sophomore forward Kehela Ventura scored a go-ahead goal at the 37th minute.
Seabury then scored twice in the second half to advance to the tournament’s quarterfinals.
“It’s just one of those things. It didn’t go our way today,” Cassler said. “We lost a couple of marks on defense, and it cost us. We just couldn’t recover from there. It was a very physical game.”
Kauai will face Waianae of the Oahu Interscholastic Association in the consolation bracket at 1 p.m. today. Waianae lost to Sacred Hearts Academy of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu in the opening round Wednesday, 4-1.
“We’re basically just going to go out there and have fun the rest of the way,” Cassler said. “Get all the girls some playing time. Maybe come out in a couple of different formations. Just mix it up and just have fun. Try to keep them happy.”
No. 2 seed Kapaa will face Makua Lani of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation at 3 p.m. today. Makua Lani beat Kalaheo of the OIA, 2-1, on penalty kicks.
