KAPAA — There were no Kauai Interscholastic Federation-record swims at the KIF qualifying swim meet No. 2 Saturday at the Kapaa Pool.
However, KIF swimmers made qualifying swims, including Zachary Safford, Kaira Ka‘aihue of Kauai High School and Pakela Panui of Kapaa High School. Kapaa also achieved qualifying swims in the girls 400-yard freestyle relay the 200 medley relay, and the boys 400-yard freestyle relay.
Safford, already picking up a state qualifying time at the opening meet in Waimea with a KIF record-setting swim, added to his collection of state time by touching the wall at 1 minute, 51.80 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle. He also picked up state qualifying swims in the 50-yard freestyle (22.93), and the 100-yard backstroke (59.50).
Ka‘aihue walked off with qualifying swims in the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.19) and the 50-yard freestyle (26.49).
Panui, swimming with the boys medley relay, picked up an individual state swim in the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.72).
Kapaa also added relay qualifying times when the Warrior ladies finished with a qualifying swim in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:13.76) and the girls 200-yard medley relay (2:05.56).
The Warrior men also finished the day with a state swim in the boys 400-yard freestyle relay on a touch at 3:54.75.
The next KIF qualifying swim moves to the Kauai High School pool Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
