When is Mahelona Hospital going to make mochi, Ed Kawamura?
Ed got to take his turn wielding the kine (even Kauai Community College exchange student Erika Ishiguro got to make one) during the mochitsuki at the welcoming luau for Nippon Maru cadets and officers at KCC. Ed said the kine all go to Mahelona Hospital next.
Kudos to Kyoko Ikeda (she was so busy at the luau she never got to meet the Nippon Maru captain) and Dennis Chun for coordinating the last-minute visit of the Japanese sailing ship. Bradford Kaeo waited until the third bus to do her pule, and the cadets were thrilled when Sarah Manuel (she was doing lei duty) consented to be photographed with them.
Sumiko Fujimoto got to meet her sister’s grandson, Taiki Yokota, who was a cadet aboard Nippon Maru, and Barbara Gusman was thrilled her family was able to host a couple of the cadets. Jim Jung had his U.S. Coast Guard cap on and in uniform when he got to meet his cadet, and Janice Bond was already telling people about the women’s march taking place the day after the presidential election.
Kudos to Tom Shigemoto (A&B also contributed toward the welcoming luau) and the AJA league on the start of its 87th season! Mel Nishihara said “10 more years,” and what happens on the 100th anniversary?
