Happy Camper for Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017

Olympic swimmer Anthony Ervin was totally shocked and thrilled when Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. declared Jan. 5 as Anthony Ervin Day.

Anthony was into his clinic (kudos to Swim Kauai Aquatics coach Curt Colby for setting up the event!) when the mayor arrived with his proclamation, giving Anthony even more fuel for his inspirational presentation. He left Thursday night and is spending time training at the University of Hawaii pool.

Coach Curt said Anthony was treated to some real Hawaiian-style hospitality because Chris Machorek arranged for Anthony and his guest to a luau (did Leilani Bond Low know she had a celebrity in the house?) at the Courtyard by Marriott at Coconut Beach, and there were a couple of other amenities.

Coach Jason Caldeira said the county’s basketball league starts Monday with games at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center. The county’s Department of Parks and Recreation set up a skills camp, including a shootout, relays, and other ball handling skills ahead of the season which will now include championships for the different age levels.
