Portugal’s Frederico Morais will be in the main draw of the Billabong Pipe Masters, according to Ocean Promotion’s Jodi Wilmott.
Morais is the current leader in the Triple Crown of Surfing ratings after finishing runner-up at both the Hawaiian Pro and the World Cup of Surfing.
He had been slotted to compete in the Pipe Masters Invitational, of which only the final two competitors make it into the Pipe Masters main draw. But Morais has now been called upon as an injury replacement wild card due to his Triple Crown performance.
He has 16,000 points through the first two legs, ahead of John John Florence in second (12,300), Jordy Smith in third (12,100), Kelly Slater in fifth (9,100) and the rest of the field. Moving into the invitational draw for Morais will be Kalani Chapman.
The 2016 Billabong Pipe Masters begins its waiting period today on Oahu, with the invitational to be the first heats in the water.
