When the Kauai Island Singers sing, they don’t do it so people can hear them.
“We sing so people can feel us,” said member Trudy Vella.
People will have a chance to do both hear and feel the songs performed by the community group on Saturday when “KISS sings great music by musical greats” this weekend.
The show, their last until March, is set to begin at 6 p.m. Saturday at All Saints Church in Kapaa. It is free, but donations are accepted.
The “Legends, Divas and Superstars” concert will feature classic songs of Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Etta James, Meghan Trainor, Donna Summer, Elvis Presley, Stevie Wonder, The Pointer Sisters, Ella Fitzgerald, Elton John and Ray Charles.
It will be what is described as a wide range of genres — jazz, soul, standards, country, rock n roll, blues, opera, disco, funk and Motown.
Performers will be Vella, Erik Hagen, Mike Kobayashi, Lee Miller, Trishana Star, Stanley Wolshin, Mary Ellen Kopitzke, Melissa Mojo,
Siri Shabad and Diana Leone.
The band includes Hank Curtis on piano, Paul Foti on bass and Jim Fiore on drums.
“The band is really smoking,” Mojo said.
The 90-minute concert promises to be high energy, entertaining and filled with tunes people can sing along with.
“You’re going to know practically all the songs,” Mojo said.
It will also be what she called a “very heart-based” show highlighted by solo performances.
“We’re doing it because we love it and we’re giving it to the community,” said Mojo, who plans to sing “Nice ‘N’ Easy made famous by Frank Sinatra, and “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King.
Other songs will include:
Leone singing “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” and “Unchain My Heart.”
Miller will sing “I get a kick out of you.”
Shabad will sing the disco hit, “Hot Stuff,” and a Stevie Wonder number, “Superstition.”
Wolshin is set to sing “Blue Suede Shoes” and “Quado, Quando, Quando.”
Vella will sing “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.”
One of the songs by Kopitzke will be “I”m so excited,” made famous by the Pointer Sisters.
Kobayashi is set to sing “Sweet Caroline,” Neil Diamond tune now popular at Boston Red Sox games, and “On a Clear Day, You Can See Forever.”
Trishan Starr will sing “Better When I’m Dancin’” by Meghan Trainor.
The songs will be upbeat, mellow and in between.
“It’s going to be a really fun show,” Mojo said.
KISS has been around four years. It’s for people who want to get more experience performing live on stage, expand their repertoire and just love to sing and put on a show.
Members bring their own styles and talents with a common goal of supporting each other.
“We do it because we love it,” she said. “We’re like an ohana.”
