Woman dies in Lawai crash

LAWAI — A 65-year-old Kalaheo woman died Monday night in a single-vehicle accident after the car she was driving crashed into a building, authorities said.

Police have not released her identity pending notification of next of kin.

According to a preliminary investigation, the woman was heading north on Koloa Road about 6 p.m. when her Honda sedan crossed the center line and struck a fence along the southbound shoulder of the roadway, The impact caused the sedan to flip onto its roof before crashing into a building. The woman died at the scene of the crash. She was the lone occupant of the vehicle.

Police closed Koloa Road in both directions, from Kaumualiii Highway to Lauoho Road, until shortly after 10 p.m. during the investigation.

This is Kauai’s sixth traffic fatality this year.
