HANAPEPE — A California man remains in critical condition after he became distressed while snorkeling off Salt Pond Beach in Hanapepe at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Bystanders had pulled the man to shore and were administering CPR when firefighters arrived on scene.

According to witness reports, the 55-year-old man was snorkeling in calm water when he began to have difficulty breathing.

Firefighters and medics continued CPR as they transported the patient to the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. He was then medevaced to Queen’s Hospital Saturday night, where he remains in critical condition.
