Da Shadow: Coconuts

Editor’s note: Old-timers might still remember the introduction from The Shadow radio program: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!” Jerome Freitas, a retired state Department of Transportation worker who is now better known as Da Shadow, since 2004 has been meeting with government representatives about problems he has discovered or that have been reported to him, and reporting the county’s responses.

Wailua Houselots

Can the county trim the coconut tree next to the tennis courts at Wailua Houselots?

Yes, the Department of Parks and Recreation currently has a contract for coconut tree trimming and will request trimming here.

Kealia Beach Park

Can the county repaint the handicapped parking spots? This question has been brought up many times but nothing has been done.

The Department of Public Works Roads Division has received this request and anticipates completing the work by the end of July.

Fujii Beach Park (Baby Beach)

Whatever happened to the shower for the beachgoers? When will the showers be replaced?

We have not been made aware of any concerns with the showers at this location but we will investigate. Public shower facilities are also located at the nearby Lihi Park.

On Hardy Street, county workers did some roadwork recently near the County Historic Building. Will this area be resurfaced?

The Hardy Street project is complete and the entire roadway has recently been resurfaced. Hardy Street does not extend to the Historic County Building. If this question pertains to Eiwa Street, this roadway will be resurfaced as part of the upcoming Tiger Grant project.

Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex

Will the county be moving the bleachers back, away from the field?

The Department of Parks and Recreation has contracted a consultant to help improve the seating at the field. In addition to adjusting the seating, the work will also include improving the restrooms and the concession stand.
