Waimea High School’s Marcus Pereira fell to Kohala’s Jamesen Keyes, 6-1, 6-4, to open the Kauai Interscholastic Federation showing at the Carlsmith Ball Hawaii High School Athletic Association state tennis championships at the Fairmont Orchid Hawaii Tennis Center & Mauna Lani Bay Hotel Fitness Club on Thursday.
Redemption came at the hands of Kauai’s Mitchell Evans who succumbed to Pereira during the KIF qualifying matches final. Evans took the court Thursday afternoon and defeated Castle’s Kingston Sato, 6-3, 6-0, to face the No. 4 seed Hideto Kitagawa from Mid-Pacific Institute.
Kitagawa, advancing from a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ziggy Bartholomy, went on to defeat Evans, 6-0, 6-0.
On the girls singles courts, Island School’s Mia Fitzgerald fell to No. 7 seed Michelle Uyeda, 6-1, 6-0 in the opening round.
Mia’s sister, Michaela Fitzgerald had an afternoon match, dropping to No. 6 seed April Wong, 6-1, 6-1.
On the boys doubles court, Kapaa’s duo of Joshua Zietz and Shawn Yamane fell to Konawaena’s Anakele Apisaloma and Brant Yamamoto, 6-0, 6-1.
In the afternoon match, Island School’s Elijah Leech and Manix Wolan fell to Roosevelt’s pair of Casey Onoye and Raynor Moux, 6-3, 6-2.
Waimea’s pair of Kari Correa and Karla Bermudez were facing the No. 1 seed of Sarah Ikioka and Kylee Kato, dropping their opening match, 6-0, 6-0.
Kapaa’s Isabella Kotsol and Deidre Andaya were set for the afternoon battle, but not without a fight. They went down at the hands of McKinley’s Leilani Ly and Maria Barayuga, 7-5, 6-2.
