While the wind plagued the tennis matches in Waimea, the rain forced the tennis teams to seek other venues at the Hanalei Bay Resort Saturday.
“We were chased away from Princeville with some passing rains,” said Kapaa coach Rick Wanek. “Everyone drove to the Kauai Community College to look for dry courts there. All but two matches were finished when rain hit us again.”
Wanek said the games in progress will be made up Wednesday in Kapaa.
Kapaa held a 4-0 edge over Island School boys, and the Warrior women were tied with the Voyagers, 2-2 before rain forced the postponement.
“The Boys First Doubles was stopped by rain with the Kapaa boys, Jon Uribe and Jake De Peralta winning the first set over Island School’s Manx Wolman and Elijah Leach-Kritchman, 7-5,” Wanek said. “But they were down 0-4 in the second set when the rains came.”
On the girls’ court, the Girls First Doubles saw Kapaa’s Brittany Uribe and Isabella Kotsol take the first set, 6-4 over Aija Scalifani and Risa Whetsel and were leading 3-2 in the second set when the match was called.
Both matches will resume Wednesday at the Kapaa High School courts starting at 4 p.m.
On the girls side, Island School’s Mia Fitzgerald and No. 1 Michaela Fitzgerald took decisive 6-0, 6-0 wins over Kapaa’s Deidre Andaya and Shannon Sitzler, respectively.
Kapaa girls rebounded on the doubles court when Island School had to default the Girls Third Doubles to give Kapaa’s Lila Hearn and Kayla Takamura the win. Kapaa also took the Girls Second Doubles when Chiara Fumagalli paired with Sydney Nice to come from behind and defeat the Island School pair of Gabby La Fratta and Julia Randolf-Flagg, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
On the boys courts, Kapaa controlled Island School when Shawn Yamane downed Kahea Kamalani, 6-1, 6-0 on the Boys First Singles arena. The Boys Second Singles saw Kapaa’s Joshua “Bear” Zietz down Sam Goldberg, 6-1, 6-0.
Moving to the doubles arena, Kapaa Boys Second Doubles saw Braedon Andrews pair with Mason Buick to defeat the Voyagers’ Tebbo Beyer and Dominique La Fratta 706 (3), and 6-3. On the Boys Third Doubles, Kapaa’s pair of Makani Crowder and Kyler Tom defeated Island School’s Qenton Allen and Coleman Jones, 6-2, 6-2.
