LIHUE — The Kauai Pop Warner Football League launched its spring football with a double-header Saturday at Isenberg Field in Lihue.
The Lihue Patriots with coach Jason Apilado hosted the pair of games, first against the Hanapepe Colts coached by Kyle Linoz, followed by a match against the Kekaha Titans coached by Keli‘i Aguiar.
“This is a developmental program,” said KPWFL president Teddy Arroyo, who also did defensive coaching duty for the Patriots. “It’s a short team format with seven-person teams in a pass-only format.”
Arroyo said because the program is a developmental sport, no official scores will be kept, although he said the coaches and parents probably keep track of it on their own.
“Earlier in the morning, we hosted the Hanapepe Colts,” Arroyo said. “They had quite a good-sized crowd supporting them.”
As the days ticked down to the opening pass, Arroyo said Ricky Waalani stepped up to the plate and provided shirts for the teams’ players, coaches and even the cheerleaders.
Arroyo said there will be more games scheduled for Saturday at Isenberg Field.
