KILAUEA — After more than a year of clearing out garbage on a 75-acre piece of undeveloped land, ‘Aina Ho’okupu o Kilauea is making progress in establishing an agricultural park on the site.
Yoshito L’Hote, executive director of ‘Aina Ho’okupu o Kilauea, said 11 acres will be cleared by March 20.
The land, which borders Kahili Quarry Road, used to be a dumping ground for mattresses, washing machines and cars.
Now, L’Hote plans to use the land as an ag park, called Kilauea Community Agricultural Center, that he hopes will grow food, create jobs, foster a sense of community and allow the town to become a more sustainable area.
Phase 1 of the ag park, which includes clearing land and establishing community gardens, will be completed by June, L’Hote said. The next step is getting water to the site and building a farmer’s market area.
The ag park will be completed in June 2017, L’Hote said.
A meeting on the ag farm’s progress is set for 6 p.m. Friday in the Kilauea Elementary School cafeteria.
“We will be sharing our progress and will be getting input from the community on the direction and design of our center,” L’Hote said. “We’re definitely making progress.”
