KALAHEO — The National Tropical Botanical Garden has announced that online registration is open and already filling fast for the March Botanical Illustration Intensive Workshop on Kauai.
Returning to NTBG to lead the workshop is botanical illustrator, author and instructor Wendy Hollender, whose works have been featured in The New York Times, Sunset Magazine, and in exhibitions at the the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C., and the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, England.
The workshop is being offered in one-, two-, or three-week sessions between March 6-25 at NTBG Headquarters in Kalaheo.
Hollender will teach the critical elements of plant structure and their importance through dissection and comparison. Students will create detailed botanical drawings and sketches of flowering plants, fruits, and seed pods, working with a wide variety of tropical plant material growing in NTBG’s South Shore Gardens. Previous drawing experience is an asset but not required.
The workshop also includes the study of botanical illustrations spanning four centuries using archival material available in NTBG’s extensive collection in order to better understand how traditions are the foundation of techniques still in use today.
