WAILUA — The Kapaa High School boys and the Kauai High School girls paddling teams picked up wins Saturday when the Kauai Interscholastic Federation inaugurated its paddling regattas for 2015 at the Wailua River.
Kapaa boys soared to the top after finishing the four-mile distance paddle at 27 minutes, 33.75 seconds followed by Waimea crossing the line nearly 17 seconds later at 27:49:48. Kauai boys finished third at 28:26:63 and other teams on the water included Kapaa B (29:43:66) and Kapaa C (30:26:40).
During the girls’ race, Kauai topped the fleet with a 30:17:43 paddle over four miles followed by the Warriors crossing at 30-:35:92. Kapaa B crossed at 31:02:49, a scant .46 second ahead of Waimea’s 3:02:78 paddle. Kauai B rounded out the fleet at 34:37:24.
Due to a technical issue, results of the varsity mixed race were not available.
Kapaa teams swept the junior varsity arena, winning races in the JV girls, JV boys and JV mixed divisions.
The Warrior JV teams lucked out on the draw, taking Lane 1 for its top finishes, the JV girls crossing at 15:50:10 followed by the Kauai A team at 16:28:49 and the Raider B team crossing at 18:25:58.
On the JV boys’ race, Kapaa topped the lanes at 14:32:90 followed by Kapaa B (14:45:73) and the Kauai JV boys (14:58:27).
Kapaa dominated the JV mixed races. Warrior teams filled in the top three spots when its A team crossed at 14:52:17 followed by the B team at 15:18:55 and the C team crossing at 15:26:59. Kauai A team filled in at 15:32:76 challenged by the Raider B team at 15:54:62 and an unofficial Waimea team crossing at 14:43:97.
With its wins, Kapaa picks up four points each in the JV Girls, JV boys, JV mixed, varsity boys, and two points in the varsity girls.
Kauai picks up four points in the varsity girls, one point in the varsity boys, and two points each in the JV girls, JV boys and JV mixed. Waimea finishes with a point in the varsity girls and two points in the varsity boys.
The next regatta, another distance event, takes place Saturday starting at 9 a.m. on the Wailua River.
Mia Pauletto, the KIF paddling official, said the format is a shorter run in response to requests from fans to be able to see more of the race.
