LIHUE — Island School’s Brandon Beydoun beat out the Mililani stopper in the 71st minute Friday afternoon at the Vidinha Stadium.
He followed the takeaway with a foot that saw the ball bury itself in the opposite corner, igniting a rousing response from the Island School fans in the stands.
The goal broke a halftime stalemate and gave the Voyagers a 2-1 win.
“It feels really good,” said Steve Yanarell following the game, getting agreeing smiles from Josh Miller. “We won!”
Mililani High School boys soccer, the Queen’s Medical Center Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I champions for 2015, arrived Friday for a four-game preseason series.
“A win is a win,” said Island School coach Sean Magoun. “We’ll take it any way — whether it’s pretty, or not. Actually, I was wondering how the boys were going to hold up after the center ref told us we had five more minutes to play. When he blew the whistle, the boys were celebrating, and to play five more minutes. I was wondering if they could hold on, and they did.”
Magoun said the Voyager goalkeeper almost had the point Mililani scored in the 35th minute to tie the contest 1-1 at the half.
“Andres Elzaurdia did a good job out there,” Magoun said. “That penalty kick by Mililani was so close — just outside his reach.”
Alae Miike put Island School on the scoreboard with a goal in the 31st minute.
“When we found out we were playing Mililani first, I didn’t know what to make of it,” Magoun said. “I don’t know if we wore them down for Kapaa, or maybe we got them riled up with the win.”
Mililani came back to face the Kapaa Warriors, putting its efforts on ball control.
Coach Kevin Cram of the Warriors worked his defense and moved players to different positions on the field to see their individual performances.
Mililani got nets from Jonny Conner and Kawika Zarko in the second half to claim a 2-0 win over the Warriors.
Mililani will face Waimea boys at 10 a.m. at the Hanapepe soccer fields adjacent to Hanapepe Stadium before returning to Vidinha Stadium to close its series against Kauai High School boys in a 4 p.m. game Saturday.
