Phil Eliana, of Hanamaulu, competed in the 2015 U.S. Open Racquetball Championship in Minneapolis last week.
More than 750 competitors coming from all over the world met at the tournament. This year, a new division was added, the Heroes division, which is only open for police, military, firefighters and paramedics. Since this is the first year, a consolation round for this division was also added.
Eliana played in two divisions and lost in his first skill-age division, 55+ Singles, but won a consolation medal in the new Men’s Heroes B/C Division.
“It’s really tough playing at different locations and just like the Nationals in May, the concrete courts made the ball so fast that diving all over the court was my only option to keep the ball in play.” Eliana said. “Fortunately, working with my friend and 13-time national champ Fred “Rabbit” Rogers a week before this event really helped me out.”
