Safeway District Manager George Glukfeld said the Safeway store at Hokulei Village is the most highly anticipated store opening since Safeway started doing business in Hawaii in 1963.
Several thousand customers poured through the doors of the 58,000-square-foot grocery store that features a Bank of Hawaii branch, a Starbucks Coffee counter, a pharmacy, and a host of new Safeway store customer services, including a cafe with Wi-Fi, locally grown and organic produce section and more.
The Safeway opening also coincided with the grand opening of Hokulei Village by Terramar Retail Centers as well as Supercuts.
The grand opening included entertainment and specials such as gift card giveaways, grocery giveaways and free samples.
