Tree Planting to honor Sen. Daniel Inouye

A memorial olive tree planting ceremony will be held in honor of Sen. Daniel K Inouye from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Sept. 4, at the Kauai Veterans Center in Lihue. The ceremony will be hosted by Mayor Bernard Carvalho and the (what) committee.

Born in Honolulu in 1924, Inouye was elected as Hawaii’s Democratic State Representative in 1959 and entered the Senate in 1963. Throughout his life, he was elected to nine consecutive terms over a period of 49 years.

Inouye also served in World War II in the 442nd Infantry Regiment, and was married for nearly 57 years. He died in 2012, six years after his wife, Margaret Awamura Inouye’s death in 2006.
