Awarding awesome anthurium

LIHUE — Estelle Furuike said having a greenhouse really helps.

Estelle earned top honors in the judging by the Kauai Anthurium Association with 72 points during the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair that wrapped up Sunday night at Vidinha Stadium.

Her husband, Raymond, finished in fourth place with 52 points, but garnered the coveted Best in Show award for his orange specimen.

“This year’s judging was really tough,” said Roy Yamakawa, one of three University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources retired administrators. “The points total were really close between five specimen.”

Holly Moises filled in second place with 66 points followed by Patricia Macadangdang with 56 points.

Peter McHugh rounded out the leaderboard with 25 points.

Moises said there were a total of 63 plants entered for judging among nine members of the anthurium club.
