KALAHEO — Kelson Rapozo of the Lihue Lakers had a very special day Monday.
Not only was it his birthday where he celebrated “a decade,” he also finished with high-point scoring honors for the Lakers during the Kaulupono Summer Basketball League games at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Kelsen netted four points in the second half, but the effort came up short as the Supersonics took a 15-7 win over the Lakers in the first of four games contested in the final week of summer ball.
Helping Kelson, Ian Rapozo dropped three points in the first half.
Jeremiah Harper topped the Supersonics division 4 scoring with seven points, including a trey in the first half.
Brayden Heu-Greenbaum, Aysen Kauahi, and Kevin Valenciano helped the win with second-half pairs.
The Supersonics finished the night on a winning note as its second team, a boys division 3 team, pulled ahead for a 36-25 win over Team Lihue behind 10-points from Bryce Fernandez and Kylan Constantino.
Aden Ringor, aggressive throughout the night until fouling out, chipped in eight points with Mason Broyles and Kealii Malu Kaawa each added four points.
Pono Carvalho from Team Lihue proved a worthy opponent against Ringor’s efforts and led the team with eight points in the night. Mike Navarro finished with six points. Michael Questin ended with four points to round out the Lihue leaderboard.
The Yungballers had their opportunities, but a turnover with just ticks remaining on the clock sealed their fate, dropping a 34-33 heartbreaker to the Kanu Elite in a very physical and quick division 3 boys matchup.
Coming back from a 22-14 deficit at the break, the Yungballers aggressively worked the ball and got its first lead, 27-25, in the match when Randall Fernandez dropped a bucket with 5:53 remaining in the game. The seesaw continued until the 1:31 mark when Amareyon Cromartie came up the middle in traffic to knot the game 32-32 before the Yungballers hiccupped on missed free throws and a turnover.
Amareyon Cromartie topped the Yungballers’ effort on six points, four coming in the second half, with Johnson Alupay adding five points, four in the first half. Jeff Aradic had four second-half points. Arnie Fernandez added three second-half points.
Jhencen Cummings topped the Kanu Elite scoring with a game-high 14 points and numerous rebounds followed by Kamakana Gonsalves with eight points including a three-ball in the first half. Loni Tafea finished with six points. Kanu Elite also got a trey from Mason Carvalho in the first half.
David Sabo Jr. scored 20 points to lead Papalina to a 39-26 win over Team Central in the nightcap. Nick Herbig and Chanson Hawelu added six and five points, respectively, in the victory.
Braeden Simao finished with 11 points to top the Team Central effort. Jim Ehia and Jaren Ruiz-Acantilado added six and four points, respectively.
