LIHUE — When Daneelle Bishop needs fabrics, she knows where to go: Discount Fabric Warehouse.
“You can come here for anything,” the Wailua resident said.
The business, which has thrived under the ownership of Bill Miller since 1995, is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
The store offers a variety of fabrics for projects including quilts, clothing and stuffed animals. It carries fabric with Asian and Hawaiian prints as well as cloth featuring movie and TV show characters, in addition to items such as needles, pin cushions, scissors and sewing patterns.
Manager Erika Hessheimer is thrilled with company’s success.
“It’s pretty awesome that we’ve been going this long,” she said.
Originally known as Singer’s Sewing Center, the company was purchased by Miller and kept that name while located in Ben Franklin Crafts in Lihue. After moving, it became Discount Fabric Warehouse.
The store is offering sales and discounts to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
Belen Ganiron of Kapaa has been a shopper at the store since it opened. She recalls buying cloth to sew hula outfits for her children there.
“This is like family oriented store for fabric stores in Kauai,” Ganiron said. “The employees are very helpful and you get all what you need here.”
Tese Lugo loves walking into Discount Fabric Warehouse once a week to find fabric to sew iPad and iPod inserts.
“It’s great,” the Kalaheo resident said. “I love the materials, they have different qualities, they have a variety of lotions.”
Marylou Bradley has been working at the store since 2006.
“I think it’s fabulous and I hope they go 60 because they are such a part of the community here,” she said. “The clientele is awesome. Sewing is an art and it’s like in any artist community — you have people that share with each other a love of the process.”
Sales clerk Oeita Kauakahi, who has worked with Discount Fabric Warehouse for six years, said they have good relationships with their customers.
“I just see us getting stronger and stronger as each year goes by, almost like we’re grown up now,” she said. “We’re adults.”
Hessheimer is looking forward to the future.
“I would hope to continue our growth and have a successful business and happy customers that are continuing to sew, including young adults that are coming into the store,” she said.
Discount Fabric Warehouse is located in the Kuhio Mall Shopping Center, 3-3215 Kuhio Hwy., No. 9.
